Sono due metodi diversi, che usano configurazioni diverse (uno tramite file di testo, l'altro tramite interfaccia grafica). Non è che se configuri l'uno, anche l'altro "eredita" i parametri. L'unica interazione che hanno, è che NM (che è nato dopo e quindi si è dovuto adattare) decide di non gestire un'interfaccia se ha il sospetto che l'utente la stia già gestendo con l'altro metodo. E il sospetto gli viene se trova quell'interfaccia configurata in /etc/network/interfaces. Ma attenzione: non è che legge i parametri che ci sono scritti dentro e li traduce nella sua configurazione; si limita a rilevare che l'interfaccia è definita e si fa da parte.

Se tu hai sempre configurato tutti e due, sappi che hai sempre fatto una parte del lavoro inutilmente, perché NM ha sempre ignorato l'interfaccia doppiamente configurata (a dire la verità non sono sicuro che NM si sia sempre comportato così: non escludo che nella notte dei tempi NM e ifup/ifdown competessero per gestire la stessa interfaccia, causando non pochi problemi).

Che c'entra l'America qui? Molti router hanno indirizzo 192.168.0.1 perché è il primo IP utile del range 192.168.x.x, che è quello dedicato alle reti private. Il primo host che si collega riceve l'IP 192.168.0.2 perché è il primo IP libero e così via. Però se Cris ha intenzione di collegare più dispositivi allo stesso router, magari in un ordine arbitrario, allora gli sconsiglierei di usare IP statici: il DHCP è stato inventato per quello!

Però, perché nelle vecchie edizioni di Debian (tipo la 4.0) da NM riportava in interfaces? Lo ricordo perché andai a vedere di persona per capire dove sistemava i dati immessi nel pannello grafico. Stessa cosa con la Lenny... e non è una mia impressione perché ho salvato (all'epoca) ciò che era concernente in caso si fosse disabilitato qualcosa...

Poi scusa: se esiste il pannello grafico, fatto appositamente per i dati di connessione, dove andrebbe a salvarli..? Li terrebbe là per fare "bella figura?"

Ho provato tempo fa ad inserirli solo in interfaces e dopo fatto il reboot del pc, me li mostrava anche in NM ...come mai se dovrebbero essere due cose differenti? Attenzione però, perché non mi riferisco all'applet nm, ma la vero pannello che corrisponde a Proprietà della connessione ed ha al suo interno il NM...

Come ho detto prima, non so quale fosse il comportamento nelle precedenti versioni. In Squeeze funziona come descritto a chiare lettere nel wiki, alla sezione Wired Networks are Unmanaged:

As of Debian Squeeze, NetworkManager does not manage any interface defined in /etc/network/interfaces by default. Unmanaged devices means NetworkManager doesn't handle those network devices.

Direi di concentrarci ora sul problema di Cris, se e quando fornirà qualche aggiornamento sul suo problema.

Salva con Ctrl O (vocale) ed esci con Ctrl X

Controlla poi che anche nel pannello di rete sia tutto impostato come nel file interfaces, cioè ci siano gli stessi parametri; tasto dx sull'icona e clicca "modifica connessioni". Poi seleziona la connessione, vai al pannello ipv4 e inserisci i parametri. Salva (ti chiederà la pass di root) e infine dare il comando sudo ifup eth0. Spero che tu abbia già impostato il tuo router NON in modo DHCP altrimenti avresti un conflitto.
In caso posta il risultato di sudo ifconfig nonché il nome del provider che usi e che tipo di modem/router hai (te l'hanno dato loro o l'hai acquistato?)

NOTA: puoi anche fare un copia/incolla in interfaces dei dati sopra messi e poi cambiare con i dati della tua connessione

Dunque.. Una cosa che è assolutamente da notare è che nelle connessioni ("modifica connessioni") non ho nessuna connessione......

Ho TELECOM ITALIA come fornitore di servizi, modem di Alice e router della D-Link (ma tieni presente che con l'Ubuntu funzionava tutto subito senza necessità di configurare nulla, quindi non credo sia un problema di modem e/o router).

Ricapitolando navighi con il browser e una anche ftp funziona, usano porte diverse ma in ogni caso significa che non sembra un problema di configurazione della rete ..... quindi non potrebbe essere un errore nella configurazione del programma di posta elettronica ?

AGGIORNAMENTO: Confermo che ora funziona tutto tranne Evolution (strano visto che è quello già installato sul Debian)... Con IceDove mi scarica tranquillamente anche la posta.
Rimane il fatto che ho l'icona non connessa, ma poco male visto che mi funziona anche la rete locale con gli altri PC della rete.
